Functionality

WebSpy Sentinel monitors activity on your network and creates a log file. This version of Sentinel supports the following Internet protocols:

  • Web (HTTP)
  • Mail (SMTP & POP3)
  • News (NNTP)
  • Remote Login (Telnet)
  • File Transfer (FTP)
  • Secure Web (HTTPS, records size only)

WebSpy Sentinel comes in two parts: Sentinel Service, which captures and logs network traffic, and Sentinel Management, which is a separate executable that is used to configure the data capture settings.

You can use any WebSpy analysis and reporting or alerting product to analyze, monitor and report on Sentinel log files. For more information about installation procedures, please consult the product documentation.

Installing WebSpy Sentinel

Prior to installing this version of Sentinel, you need to determine your optimum installation point or points. For information on this issue, please consult the Sentinel Planning and Installation Guide.

You also need to ensure that any previous versions have been uninstalled from the system. To ensure a complete removal, you must reboot after uninstalling the previous version.

To install WebSpy Sentinel, run Sentinel.exe, and follow the onscreen instructions.

Getting Started

After installing Sentinel Service on the appropriate computers, you need to configure each service using the Sentinel Management Console. Data capture WILL NOT COMMENCE until this configuration has been performed. For more information, consult the product documentation.

Removing WebSpy Sentinel

Windows® 98 / 98 SE / ME
Sentinel can be uninstalled using the ‘Remove Sentinel’ shortcut in the WebSpy program group in your Start Menu. After uninstalling, you should reboot the computer to ensure that all components have been removed.

Windows® NT / Windows 2000 / Windows XP
Sentinel can be uninstalled using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. After uninstalling, you must reboot the computer to ensure that all components have been removed.

After uninstalling, the Sentinel configuration file and the log files will remain in the installation directory. These files can be deleted manually using Windows Explorer, or retained to be used in a future installation. Please note that the configuration files between different versions of Sentinel may not be compatible.

Known issues with WebSpy Sentinel

Upgrading from a previous version
The installation process will fail if there is any previous version of Sentinel installed on the computer. For this reason it is important to ensure that any previous version has been completely removed. Please see the product documentation for more information.

If you have any problems, questions or suggestions regarding this software please do not hesitate to contact support@webspy.com.

Sentinel Service captures all traffic passing through the network on which it is installed but only keeps (or logs) the protocols that you choose. You can log just the basic information about the Internet traffic you are seeing (i.e. source, destination, URL etc.) or you can capture all of the content of that traffic.
